The Legend of Chang'e and Houyi
Long ago, in ancient China, there were ten suns in the sky. The heat was so intense that the earth was scorched and crops withered. People were suffering, and the land was in turmoil.
Houyi, a skilled and brave archer, saw the suffering of the people and decided to save the world. With his powerful bow and arrows, he shot down nine of the ten suns, bringing relief to the land. His heroic deed made him a respected figure among the people.
The Queen Mother of the West, ruler of the heavens, was impressed by Houyi’s act of heroism. She gifted him an elixir of immortality as a reward for his selfless actions. However, Houyi cherished his mortal life and did not want to become immortal just yet. He hid the elixir away, planning to save it for a time of true need.
Houyi was married to the beautiful and kind Chang’e. They were a loving couple who brought happiness to each other’s lives. One day, a wicked and power-hungry man discovered Houyi’s secret about the elixir. He schemed to steal it and become immortal himself.
Chang’e knew of the man’s plan and wanted to protect the elixir. She could not allow such power to fall into the wrong hands. One night, when the moon was at its fullest and brightest, she consumed the elixir herself. Her body began to float, and she ascended to the moon, becoming an immortal goddess.
Houyi returned home to find his beloved wife gone. He was heartbroken, knowing that she had made a great sacrifice to protect the elixir. He gazed up at the moon and saw a figure that resembled Chang’e, living on the lunar surface.
To honor her memory, Houyi started the tradition of offering mooncakes to the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival. People would light lanterns and share mooncakes with family and friends, symbolizing the hope for reunion and the appreciation of loved ones, even when separated by vast distances.
And so, every Mid-Autumn Festival, people gather to admire the full moon, share mooncakes, and remember the touching story of Houyi and Chang’e—a tale of love, sacrifice, and the eternal connection between the Earth and the moon.
