IELTS writing task 2 sample

題目

While some individuals feel that taking a gap year between high school and university is a smart idea, others vehemently disagree. Consider all sides of the argument before expressing your own viewpoint.

You should give reasons for your answer, and include ideas and examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Write at least 250 words.

範文

While gap years are becoming more popular, they are nevertheless divisive since the advantages are difficult to measure. There are counter-arguments on both sides of this hot-button issue, which I shall address presently.
On the one hand, opponents of gap years refer to the high costs associated with plane travel, lodging, and living expenditures. All of this money must come from the student’s family or be borrowed and paid back later. Second, it is often said that gap years divert a young person’s attention away from schoolwork and enable them to engage in activities such as travel. This might make it difficult for students to acclimate to university life, resulting in poor academic achievement. Finally, there is worry about young people’s safety when they go to isolated locations. After all, being abducted or mugged is a bad way to start your academic career.
Supporters of gap years, on the other hand, argue that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. They emphasize a student’s ability to be independent and assertive in areas such as time management and interpersonal skills. They further claim that these abilities lead to better job success later in life, negating the expenses. In addition, there are several

Examples of young individuals who have used gap years to accomplish something meaningful, whether via volunteer work or working in a field that interests them.
To sum up, I believe that taking a year off may be a beneficial activity, with the experience leading to increased abilities that will be used in the future. Of course, this assumes that the year has been well planned and is being put to good use.

IELTS Writing Samples band 9

題目一

You should spend about 40 minutes on this question.
Some people believe that sport is an essential part of school life for children, while others feel it should be purely optional. Discuss these opposing views and give your own opinion.
You should give reasons for your answer, and include ideas and examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Write at least 250 words.

IELTS writing sample 1

Sport continues to be a contentious issue in the classroom, and sport itself has become a contentious enterprise in certain ways. Both sides have good points of view, which I shall address today.
On the one hand, some individuals believe that sports waste time that might be spent on academic topics like test preparation. Furthermore, it may be argued that forcing children to participate in things in which they are uninterested is foolish. After all, some children are just not athletic and should be let to study instead. Finally, there are concerns about the sport’s wholesomeness, with drugging and corruption scandals becoming more regular, as we see in cycling right now. Some argue that this lack of values sets a bad example for children and teenagers.
On the other hand, one of the most significant advantages of sport is that it aids children’s physical development at an early age. They would grow unfit and their intellect would suffer if they spent all of their time studying. Additionally, proponents of school sports highlight the value of team bonding in games such as football or hockey, which are frequently seen as ideal preparation for adulthood. Finally, many people believe that sports develop a competitive attitude, which is so crucial nowadays. Many successful business individuals, for example, excelled in sports in high school.
Overall, I believe that schoolchildren should be required to participate in sports since the benefits to their mental and physical development exceed the disadvantages. This is true as long as youngsters are given a broad choice of options to select from, their interest is maintained, and the sports business maintains the highest standards of behaviour.

題目二

Some individuals believe that keeping animals in captivity, such as in zoos, is always bad. Others argue that there are advantages for both animals and humans. Discuss all sides of the argument and provide your own opinion.
You should justify your response with reasoning and examples drawn from your own knowledge and experience.

Write at least 250 words.

IELTS writing sample 2

Even after they’ve developed into ‘animal parks’ or comparable facilities, zoos remain contentious. Animals are loved by the majority of humans, and there are strong opinions on both sides, which I shall explore today.
People who oppose zoos point out how strange it is for animals to live in such locations. Captive animals, for example, are not required to hunt or rear young, implying that they are not living as nature intended. Furthermore, the anti-zoo movement claims that animals in captivity are likely to suffer psychologically, even if their surroundings are large and comparable to their natural environment. Mental health difficulties manifest themselves in caged animals in a variety of ways, from repetitive behavior to eating disorders. Finally, it is sometimes said that zoos contribute nothing to animal conservation, which is best served by maintaining their natural environment.
Those who favor zoos, on the other hand, argue that in most circumstances, they provide a safe and serene environment for animals, such as in high-quality wildlife parks or reserves. They go on to say that in many situations, the animals would face habitat destruction or poaching in the wild, but that in captivity, they are safe and able to reproduce effectively. Finally, zoogoers believe that zoos and animal parks are part of a larger system of animal protection that includes habitat preservation, breeding programs, and illness prevention. All of this contributes to the conservation of endangered species and, as a result, the global environment for the benefit of all living forms in the future.

Overall, I believe that zoos offer a significant service to humanity and the animal kingdom by assisting in the conservation of several species. As long as they are adequately manned and maintained, this exceeds any potential downsides.

Complaint Letter

問題

Recently, you went to a camp in a holiday village with a group of friends. However, you encountered something unacceptable and would like to complain to the village authority. Write a complaint letter to the Customer Officer of the campsite, Mr. Lee, to complain about the poor camping services your group received. Sign your name ‘Chris Wong’. Do not write any address.

文章

Dear Mr Lee,

I am writing to complain about the unacceptable experiences we had when we stay at your campsite last weekend.

The first problem was about the sleeping facilities. All the sheets and blankets seemed not to have been cleaned for a long time. They were as old as ragged clothes. There was no air-conditioning. We had to sleep in a room which was a big oven! The worst thing was about the bathroom – a big bathroom for the whole group. Moreover, it was open for both sexes! What kind of camp was that? And some of the locks on the toilet’s doors were broken. How could a campsite be so inconvenient? I once bumped into a toilet cubicle where there was already a man using it! It was embarrassing for both of us.

The food was horrible not only because of their bad taste but also their poor sanitation. One of my classmates even found an insect swimming blissfully inside his bowl when he was drinking the soup. How could this happen? And the selection of food was insufficient. We had to eat the same kind of food for six days! Moreover, the breakfasts were only microwave food boxes which are lack nutrition and were unhealthy for us. I do think we observed better food!

I would say this is the worst camping experience I have ever had. I urge your campsite to review the services and quality of the food provided. I do hope prompt action will be taken to improve the quality of your campsite.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Wong

Experience and feeling

題目

One evening you went to visit your friend. However, a lift in your friend’s building stopped between floors, trapping an elderly woman and you are inside. Describe what happened in the trapped lift and how you felt about this incident.

文章

One evening I decided to give a surprise visit to my friend, Jane. She lives in a block of flats not far from my school, so I thought I would pop in on my way home.

I waited a moment for the lift in her block. As the lift door opened, I was joined by an elderly lady. No one spoke as we went into the lift. Suddenly, the lift stopped. We were plunged into darkness as the power failed. For a split second, I was panic-stricken. I pictured the lift plunging its shaft crushing us all to death. I pictured slowly dying from a lack of oxygen, as the fan had stopped working. I began to talk silently to myself to try to calm myself down. Firmly I made myself be sensible and reviewed my situation.

I could see nothing in the dark, but I could hear the old lady cry to surprise and fear. She began to weep. I told her not to worry. Someone would find us soon. In trying to calm her down, I found that I had forgotten my fear. I reached my hand out in front of me, found the panel, and tried to feel for the alarm button. Up and up my hand went, touching all the buttons. It rang out loud and clear – what a relief! At first, no one answered, and I began to feel frightened again.

I was so happy when I heard voices at last. The caretaker assured us that he had telephoned for help. All the time he kept talking to us so that we knew we were not alone. Suddenly the light came on. The lift began to move again. Now when I get in a lift, I always remember my unhappy experience and hold my breath until I can get out again!
