The race is on!
Talk about:
- the popularity of swimming in Hong Kong in general
- any potential dangers of swimming across the harbor
- the benefits of the race for participants and Hong Kong
- anything else you think is important
Notes:
– After a break of 30 years, the cross-harbor race is being organized once again. Participants have to swim from Sam Ka Tsuen Public Pier in Lei Yue Mun to Quarry Bay Park, a distance of 1.8km.
– The number of participants is limited to 1,000, and to qualify as a participant, interested applicants need to show that they can swim 1,500 meters in 45 minutes.
– One concern is whether the quality of water is suitable for swimmers, and another is whether the currents may be too strong. However, it seems that the swifter currents at Lei Yue Mun firstly help to keep the water cleaner than other parts of the harbor, and secondly help the swimmer to go with the flow to make the race easier.
– The event will not be harmful to swimmers, according to the organizers, the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association, and they hope to make the cross-harbor race an annual event.
